Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum and need some help on the issue below:

I have recently purchased an Artec MHT colour scanner and am finding it difficult to scan the hair of a person with it.

I would be very grateful for your suggestions or tutorials.

Hi, welcome!

Can you write us the technical specifications of your scanner? It appears to be a discontinued model by Artec. I wonder when it was launched...

Then, could you be more precise explaining exactly what kind of difficulties your are experiencing?

Best

A.

Hi Sambo3D,

Thanks for the reply.
The technical specs for the MHT is on this
link: http://www.artec3d.com/3d_scanners_for_ ... fications/

The problem I am having is when scanning a person with long or big hair it doesn't pick it up in the scan?

If I scan someone who has short hair the MHT is able to pick it up in the scan but cannot with long hair.

(1) If possible could you advise me of the best method of scanning hair?

(2) Do you know if I can use virtuspecs with the Artec MHT?

I have actually spoken to someone who sells Artec scanners about this issue. He said you could "tweak" the sensitivity settings in Artec Studio, but recommended having the subject brush their hair or tie it back so it is seen as a solid object.

Thank you very much for this.
I will give it a go, hopefully this will do the trick.

Hair has always been a problem for 3D scanning. Especially thin hair, which reads as individual strands rather than solid masses (dreads are better). One trick you can use is to fill the hair with shaving cream. This creates the impression of solidity, and the scanner doesn't get confused by the open spaces. Of course, this can be a problem with color-textured scans, but it works well for monochromatic ones.

I haven't tried this myself but since hair is more reflective than skin it does not read well by scanners. I have seen examples where if you dust the subjects hair with cornstarch or talcum powder it will scan much better.

Another option one would have would be to get the high resolution scan of the face, then switch to a Kinect or Primesense scanner which do well at scanning hair. Scan the back of the head and fuse the two scans.

I was at the last London 3d printing show. They used to scan people with an Artec EVA. Then, in order to solve the "hair problem" , they took 4 pictures for each head, in order to reconstruct the missing upper part.
