I just ordered a Primesense Carmine 1.09 3D scanner

The data sheet says it has a resolution of 0,6mm vs the resolution of actual Primesense scanners of >3mm!

Has anyone experience with this sensor?
Does it work with ReconstructMe?

Thank you for your review of the Carmine 1.09. I was just researching the specs of the Carmine vs. Xtion vs Kinect. I was starting to be convinced that the 1.09 was the way to go, but your video comparison was very helpful to convince me fully.

My desire is to scan faces with some detail, and I think this technology is the most economical solution for this. I look forward to your future posts with face scans!

Under what circumstances would one want to apply the glasses mod to the carmine 1.09 vs using it native?

Also, as an ophthalmologist I would wonder how much detail would be lost using over the counter +2.50 glasses if the optical centers are off vs the cameras. Wonder if the resolution would be improved if one were to make prescription +2.50s with the proper PD. Expect funny looks from your optician when you bring your Carmine in to have the glasses made.

I think the idea is to get the best resolution from the sensor that can be got. The close you can get to the object, the more focused the readings and the more accurate the data. I know nothing about these sensors, I'm just trying to determine if they're worth testing. I believe they are, based on the very few face scans that I've seen with them.

I attached above a link to edmunds optical. I didn't search long, but I will seek out the correct lens that will work as you recommended...unless you beat me to it. They are usually pretty reasonable. They ship from the US.

So if one applies the glasses mod, does that affect the working range of the scanner? And if so, how much?

From what I've read, the lenses allow you to scan about 10cm closer. The Carmine 1.09 range is 0.35m - 1.4m. If you increase the near range by 10cm, then you can scan from 0.25m...theoretically. The sensor wasn't designed for 3d scanning, so their operating range may mean something different to us. For my practical purposes, If putting the lenses on the sensor gives a better resolution scan, then It's a plus. If you saw Bernard's video that compares the Carmine w/ and w/o the lenses, then it's obvious it's worth doing.

I guess it depends on what you need the scanning for. For me, I just want to get good face scans of my children. So I don't need to get too technical in my approach.

The minimum distance with the +2.5 mod is 25cm, the maximum distance is 50cm.

This is the result of a 25 sec scan with Scanect. The mesh was exported to Meshlab before I started the "watertight" routine, to preserve the maximum detail of the scan.
