Dear Bernhard, I finally decided to buy a kinect 360. I have it. Would you please tell me or give me a link in order to start scanning? What am I supposed to do? I plugged it in my pc but nothing happened (of course..)

I see this is a very basic question, hope I am not spoiling the forum too much with it..

thanks!!

All right :) I'd recommend to download the latest version of Skanect from Manctl and follow their setup instructions for Kinect. You should get quite good scans easily!

im on board with Sambo3D. ive now got a Kinect and its time to start playing!

I started today with the KScan3D trial version. ive tried a few little demos but im not terribly happy with the results. I think i must have poor lighting or something. Lots of 'black' areas in my entire subject field of view. I dont know what the problem is. Do you know if the cameras on these XBox 360 Kinects start to fail over time? I got my Kinect 2nd hand but hardly used. I wouldnt think they would degrade so i am only assuming that the lighting is poor.

Scenect was another package i was going to try but my computer is only 32bit so i dont think i can use that until i upgrade.

I just tried to download the Skanect 32bit that you recommended and i couldnt install it - came up with an error. Ill try again tomorrow when i restart my computer and see if i have any better luck with it.

Keep trying. You'll need some practice to get good scans. If you run into problems, post a screenshot and we try to help :)

Thanks Bernhard
I thought id put up what i am looking at before i start playing around with other software just yet.
2 images attached.
The first is the actual scene - my daughter sitting about 1500mm away from the Kinect scanner (circled) and behind it are bright lights.
The second is the screen shot of my KScan software.
As you can see im not getting the scene in the KScan software. Ive tried moving about the Z Minimum slide and that seems to be in the best position with the least amount of blackout.
So im trying to think of problem solving.
Perhaps my graphics card isnt up to the challenge?
Perhaps the scanner is faulty?
Or am i making a newby mistake somewhere?
Thanks
Glenn

Please try to turn off the light. The Kinect sends out an infrared beam that is recorded by an IR camera. Probably your light is too bright. Then, try to move the "z" slider to the left position, so Kscan records all data from the depth sensor and does not cut.
If this does not work, please try a different software, like Skanect, or Artec Studio.

I agree with Virtumake. I don't know if the surface of that cabinet is reflective, but these scanners hate shiny objects and don't pick them up. Make sure the light is not bouncing off it towards the sensor.

Thanks guys
Well done - that problem is solved.
I dont think i have enough room to do a person - there is just too much background noise. im stuck to a desktop in my study at the moment but hopefully that will change.
And - the Skanect is very different to the KScan. Easy to foresee the different applications in the real world for both of them.
I think i will hang on to both for now - thanks guys.

I was in your situation. Seeing how much I enjoyed this hobby I got myself a decent laptop so I could go mobile. Then realizing my mistake in purchasing the kinect, I then bought a Carmine 1.09 for its resolution possibilities and the fact that it is powered through the laptop's USB. No more being chained to a wall outlet. Play some more and see if it is worth it to you to make the next investment.
