Makerbot announced to release a 3D Scanner within 2013

http://store.makerbot.com/digitizer.html

Video from "The Verge"

http://www.theverge.com/2013/3/8/407839 ... 3d-scanner

The scanner has a continuously moving turntable and two bar lasers.

I am curious for what price Makerbot will offer the scanner. Besides the scanner you need the 3D-scanning software to generate a 3D-model that can be printed. If the software is able to do calculate such a 3D-model without interaction from the user, they have a very interesting offer in the pipeline.

Here is an update from MakerBot about their MakerBot Digitizer. It states that the 3d scan will be directly printable in high quality! :)

Makerbot is working hard on their 3D scanner

http://www.makerbot.com/blog/2013/05/31 ... -update-2/

Their goal is to scan and 3D print without any interaction from the user. This is a huge task and I am looking forward to see the first Digitizer in action.

My research says that it will be able to scan up to an 8 X 8 inch object. What we don't know yet are the resolution and the all-important price.

The digitizer is now available for purchase. $1400 price tag much higher than what was anticipated.

@scantastic: Yes 1400 USD is a lot of money. I am looking forward to see the first 3rd party review on youtube. At least there is room for other companies to place their scanners in a lower price segment like the photon scanner.

Some interesting thoughts about the Digitizer and 3D scanning in general:
