This is the first, of a new kind of 3D-scanners. I do not know how they actually work, but what you see on the videos is amazing.

If we can use such sensors for 3D-scanning, we could get very detailed scans.

On the other hand side, what about the high data volume? Such detailed scans would lead to very big files, which need to be optimized for 3D-printing.

Nice post!In connection, when we use computers as productivity tools to boost the way we play and work, we do not want to be slowed down by a sub-standard input gadget like the conventional mouse and keyboard. The idea of a more organic, empty-handed, natural-motion controller like the Microsoft Kinect is well-liked, but execution has largely failed to meet anticipations. According to Wired, however, there's a brand new controller called the Leap Motion that may have mastered the motion controller. Resource for this article: *link removed by dmin*

Leap Motion starts to ship their hardware in July. At the same time, they open up their software store.

I can't wait to see what their developers were able to get out of this device (3D scan App ???).

Leap Motion is supposed to be 100 times more sensitive than the Kinect, but I think it has a much shorter range. It probably won't be suitable for scanning a room or a person, but would probably do a great job of scanning smaller objects. I'm looking forward to see some results when these things start shipping and someone writes a scanner app!

sparkfun did a teardown of the LeapMotion sensor.

This is what you get:

I've got a leap motion (a dev-kit) and i'm quite disappointed by it. It can't scan anything, it's just a improved version of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0awjPUkBXOU.

All you can do is track fingers to some extent, but not even really reliable. If you are in an office setting, the quality is greatly decreased because of the TL lighting. Might be interesting to change any surface in a multi-touch screen, but that causes gorilla arm quite quickly.

I had actually gone onto the leap forums a few months back. Folks there who are more knowledgeable than me were of the opinion that the Leap technology would not lend itself to feasible scanning.
