I thought I would try this on my Windows 8 64 bit machine. The program loaded all of the drivers in the x86 program file folders. The program didn't run. The documentation says it will work on Windows 7. So I'll just have to wait to see if they upgrade to W8. Has anyone else tried it?
According to the users manual, the scan is restricted to 10 seconds. That seems just a bit fast to scan a whole head. It was designed to scan heads and shoulders It looks promising, however.

I tried it with win 7 64 and carmine 1.09, but the program says: can't open depth source.
Any idea we can fix this?

Another demo from Jürgen and his Fablitec Scanner. It seems that you get a ready-to-print model right from the software.

Hi at all,

nice to read here about our 3D scanner.
So I will write down some information about it.

Regards Florian

The FabliTec 3D Scanner,

During the 3D scanning, a person or an object is scanned all around by a sensor. Those records, called meshes in technical jargon, are processed to a digital image by the 3D scanner software. Within minutes a realistic replica of the recorded person or object appears on the computer. This replica is saved and printed afterwards as a lifelike 3D model.

In reality, however, most 3D scanners require extensive post processing of the captured images. The FabliTec 3D printer that German RepRap took into their range is different. With the FabliTec 3D scanner and an Xbox 360 Kinect or Asus Xtion ProLive sensor a printable 3D image of a person or object is created at the touch of a button. Seat your friend, girlfriend, husband, wife or child, scan them one turn around and the printable file is ready. After that, a realistic image is created – without time-consuming post processing. Such easy operability is the extinguishing feature of the FabliTec 3D scanner. Moreover, the software works with the merchantable Xbox 360 Kinect sensor, which is already available in many households.

If the figures are to be output on an own RepRap printer like the PRotos or the X400, the file is saved in STL format. For multi colored printouts via print services such as Alphaform.de, Shapeways.com, i.materialize.com, it may be saved in OBJ or WRML format with the necessary color information.
The easy operability results from a special process, which calculates the camera posture directly on the surface of the person or object to be scanned. Therefore, more data is available so that the digital image becomes more precise. Previous approaches such as KinectFusion by Microsoft calculate a 2.5D depth chart at first, and do the alignment, meaning the composition of the single digital images to the 3D model, based on this data. Due to that, a lot of information is lost, causing frequent cancellations and alignment failures. The image is incorrect or less realistic.

Places which are never observed, for example the upper head or below the chin, are automatically filled by the FabliTec 3D scanner. Therefore, you always obtain a printable bust. Other approaches do not have that, so hollows are inevitable due to shades etc. Moreover, the software automatically inserts a socket, to hollow out the model. This saves printing costs and makes it easier to handle the printed objects.

The scanner software works with the Xbox 350 Kinect or an ASUS Xtion Pro Live sensor, already available in several households.
The FabliTec 3D scanner software costs 295 EUR incl. VAT. A demo version is available under https://shop.germanreprap.com/de/FabliTec-3D-Scanner . All functions are unlocked except for the possibility of saving the data in a format for further processing.

Fablitec claims they will have a Windows 8 version in a few months. I tried the program with my Carmine 1.09 on a windows 7 machine. The results were marginal. The program is designed for a specific distance (1 meter). I'm sure the developers can take what looks like a promising program and make it more flexible and competitive.
