is this then the appropriate region for using kinect as a 3d scanner?

I think you get the best result in the first zone. However, the distance of .8 meters is already pretty far away from the object.

Hi,

It seems that the Kinect 2 shows quite astonishing capabilities over the Kinect.

One question:

Would it be possible to add some magnifying lens(e.g., +2.5diopter as shown in the VirtuSpec?) in front of the Kinect 2, in order to increase the details of the small objects for 3D scanning?

Well, TOF of the Kinect 2 might have quite different behavior from the structured light speckles of the Kinect.
