Has anybody actually used the Kinect2 for 3D scanning yet? It seems promising, from the technical specs, but are there any interfaces for it that let people use it for anything but games?

Nobody can even get the 2.0 for Windows until July so I assume companies like Artec and Faro, Skanect etc. won't announce they will support it until they've developed their own applications. I suppose we must wait another month or two until we know who will develop scanning software that's compatible with it. Does anybody know of a software that claims it will?

This new sensor looks great; faster and wider field of view.

I received my Kinect V2 last week. Just starting to work with the SDK.
Reconstructme should have a kinect V2 version out soon. (Whatever soon means.) I do not believe Microsoft is allowing open source drivers for this unit. iIt seems that it will be restricted to Windows 8 /8.1 at least for now.

Do you know if it has DirectShow drivers? I'm curious if it will work with the David system.

I haven't seen anything about directshow drivers.
In my opinion the Kinect V2 will rival some higher end scanners.

VJB,
Do you know if the Kinect 2.0 will work with the Artec Studio 9 software or with Skanect?
I'd like to buy the new Kinect, but I am not a developer and just want to try scanning with it.
What are you using it for?

The guys at Kscan made drivers for use of the Kinect 2 for Windows for Kscan.

Please post your scanresults!

greetings, Rob

This is the only one I know of...

No one has offered an application that it can be used with yet.

I have been using Kinect Fusion that is available for the Kinect V2. It works well. But is limited in functionality. It is after all just a basic tool to get you started for development. I will be trying out the Kscan 3D software in the next few days and let you know how it works. It requires that you install the Microsoft kinect V2 SDK. If you go to the Kscan 3D blog, it gives a good description of the Kinect V2 issues. I use it just to scan people. In my opinion, for scanning people it works much better than the 1.08, 1.09 and Kinect v1. I emailed Artec and they said they would in time provide drivers for the kinect v2. I'm not so sure about Skanect. I think the kinect V2 would be in direct competition with their new scanner.
