Hey all,

I'm a n00b at this whole 3d scanning game. I am trying to scan my leg which turns out is not trivial.

I was looking at the NextEngine scanner comparison page (http://www.nextengine.com/gallery) and was struck by the difference between NextEngine and others. The quality is really really impressive. (why laser > photogrammetry makes sense)

What is the main difference between the technology in the NextEngine vs DIY laser scanners? (eg the makerscanner - http://www.makerscanner.com/)

thanks!

The NextEngine would be a total overkill for scanning a leg. It takes ages to scan with it. Noone would be able to stand perfectly still, so the errors you'd generate by moving would be by far greater than the resolution it can scan with. It is meant for (smaller) objects that don't move at all.

Which leaves you with 123D, Recap or a Kinect. If it's the only thing you want to scan go with 123D. It's free and does the job. If you plan to scan a lot of legs you should look into a Kinect solution.

Thanks, that's really helpful. Bummer to hear about nextengine - my hope was that it would be quick.
