Hello everyone,

I'm trying to scan complex rooms, like the interior or a boat using a Kinect and Skanect.

Since the rooms are so complex I've not been able to scan them all in one pass. So now I have different meshes of different parts that I would like to combine. The align function in meshlab has not been helpful. Meshlab crashes everytime I try to align the meshes. Probably because the meshes have too many points.

Is there an other free option that will allow me to merge the meshes?

How would you approach such a project? Laserscanners and structured light seem to be even more complicated. Especially in such tight environments.

I use David software, but the license is $400. You could look into meshlab. It may do it if you want a freebie. I would recommend Artec if you're going to spend money. After spending months of trying to make free things work, sometimes spending a little dough will move you faster through the learning process.
Good luck!

Started my 14 day trial. Artec Studio has a bit of a learning curve. Lets see if I can get it to work...
The pricetag is "professional". ;) I have to see if that makes sense for me.

I have partial scans of a room with bunkbeds. the first general issue I have is that I'm working with inside walls. so the features I want to mark for alignment are on the inside and mostly blocked by the outside walls. Working in pointcloud-view is my solution so far.

The problem with Studio I have, is that when I try to mark points for alignment, I don't know how to (temporarily) switch off the other meshes. Right now they are all overlayed wich makes it impossible to navigate.

When you are looking at the main work screen you will see the listing of all your scans and fusions on the right pane. If you uncheck some of the scans (so that the eyeball on the right disappears), then those scans should not show up when you open the alignment function. You can even go one further and right click scans to unload them temporarily, but I don't think that is necessary.
