I have seen a few of these products on the market and they are rather expensive for a small amount material. I wanted to hear from as many of you as possible as to what products you apply to shiny, transparent or dark surfaces to make them scannable. Let us all know what type of scanner you are using it for, and your experience/tips/results. For purchased products a link would be appreciated by all. I am especially interested in common spray/powders that are off the shelf and not originally intended for scanning. |

I've used Krylon Dulling Spray - it's intended for product photographers trying to avoid reflective highlights, comes off easily and isn't particularly expensive. Thanks Andrew, It may be a discontinued item, but I was still able to score a six pack for a reasonable price. I will let you know my results. |

There are a few options out there to help. Here are some that I use/heard of being used Common Items Baby Power or Talcum Powder Flour Hairspray Tinactin Dry Shampoo Professional Grade Magnaflux Spotcheck SKD-S2 Developer (around $20USD) Met-l-Chek (about $8USD) Radnor® 15 Ounce Standard Developer ($4-$7USD depending on bulk purchase and supply) |

I should mention that with the professional grade sprays, the liquid is usually Acetone or Alcohol. Please be mindful of what you will end up spraying it on. Some plastics and silicone will melt slightly, imbedding the powered clay into the surface which will alter the color of the subject, permanently. And in the case of cars, eat away at the clear coat leading to paint damage. |

I might as well say that with the expert evaluation spreads, the fluid is generally Acetone or Alcohol. It would be ideal if you make a special effort to be aware of what you will wind up splashing it on. A few plastics and silicone will dissolve somewhat, imbedding the controlled earth into the surface which will adjust the shade of the subject, forever. Also on account of autos, destroy the agreeable cover prompting paint harm. |
