Hi there,

me and a friend are developing a 3D laser scanner for our final school project. We have made all decissions concerning the hardware (so far) and will write our own code from the first line. Somehow, we find it hard to make up a good main question for this project. It is too easy to ask 'How to make a 3D scanner' or 'is it possible to scan an object with a laser?'. Perhaps someone in this community knows a good question that can (partly) be answerred by designing a new 3D laser scanner from scratch.

I am looking forward for an answer :).

42 (forty-two) is the natural number immediately following 41 and directly preceding 43. The number has received considerable attention in popular culture as a result of its central appearance in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as the "Answer to The Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything".

Virtumake made a funny.

How about:

If we design a 3D laser scanner, how do variations in the software or hardware (equipment and setup) affect the resolution of the scan?

Sry for my bad joke ;)

How can a physical object be converted into a digital model?

How can a laser device be used to digitize an object?

What are the advantages of a laser based 3D scanner over a tactile digitizer?

@virtumake haha, np. I actually just realized what you meant by replying 42 :P.

Both thanks for the questions!

I think the main question shouldn't be something that could be answered with a quick google search.

How can a laser device be used to digitize an object?

These two, for example, were the first things I googled when somebody told me about 3D scanning.

We will tell our lecturer that we try to answer this question with our project, because it is something we can answer very accurately with our own experience in building a scanner from scratch.

Anyways, we are still able to switch between a main question, so, if somebody has got a good in-depth question for us, or something comes to your mind (even after a few weeks), don't hestitate to tell us about it :).

You could also try to quantify what physical properties of an object affect the quality of the scan (reflectivity, shape, color, hue, saturation, etc.)

Hi there,

Although it was a long time ago we posted this question, I would like to say that our project was successful :). We managed to design, manufactor and program a complete new 3D laser scanner. We have also written a book about it (Dutch). ISBN: 9789402116625

Thanks for the help to get a good main question for our project.

Greetings,
makers of Scann3rD.
