Hi dear fellow forum members,
as a project for university, I must 3D scan objects and derive their volume from these scans. I'm a total newbie to the topic of 3D scanning, but I find it really exciting!!
One challenge might be that it must also be able to scan glassy surfaces (e.g., cups and drinking glasses).
Do you know whether
- this is possible? If yes, how can I calculate the volume of an object (ie. is there a software that can do that?)?
- which hardware to use best - the objects can be as high as 50cm x 25cm x 15 cm (20"x10"x6") and I need an accuracy of <= 1mm in each dimension.
- do I need a turntable or something similar to make sure that I scan the whole object - or how does this work? How can a scanner scan the back side of an object?

Thank you so much for your support!
Best regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel!

There is a cool piece of software that allows to measure 3D scans. It is called "3d-tool"

Get it at this link: http://www.3d-tool.de/

The hardware depands on your accurcy needs an the time you would like to spend postprocessing. If you have a tight budget and some time, have a look at David-Laserscanner.

Here is a realatively simple turntable for your David-Laserscanner: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:141287

Best,
