Hello everyone! I need to scan the sculpture. To export the 4-axis CNC machine, resolution 0.2-0.5mm Could you give me advice to choose 1 3D scanning products meet the requirements of my job. In my opinion the quality of "PrimeSense, Kinect and Asus, .." poorly unusable. I noticed "Photogrammetry" quality is not equal to "Structured Light Scanners". I have tried "Agisoft PhotoScan" and "123D Catch" and unsatisfactory results. I see the "Structured Light Scanners" appropriate costs, I intend to have a set, but I could not yet use and did not know about it. Could you give me advice on what devices should be used? What software? I am confused between David-Laserscanner, Real3D, 3dunderworld. Using what gives me the best quality and reasonable price. And why do I see the Acer K11 projector to use while it is only 200 ANSI lumens compared to the other products 2,000 ansi lumens. |

Hi! and DON'T PANIC ![]() Could you please describe your sculpture a little: size, indoor/outdoor, surface texture. If possible, could you please upload a picture? I made such scans with Carmine 1.09 and Artec Studio. However, if it is an outdoor scan, you need to wait until night, because the IR light of the sun disturbs your Carmine Sensor. |

I scanned the wooden sculptures indoors. And the average size, but needs more clarity. Sizes from 100x100x100mm to 500x500x1000mm To me generate G-code for CNC machine should need about 0.2mm resolution but smooth. For example: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

In short because I'm in a hurry: 1. wooden sculpture -> good texture -> photogrammetry possible (Agisoft PhotoScan should do it) 2. needed resolution 0.2 mm -> needed resolution in photo at least 0.1 mm (devided by two). 3. Your camera has for example a resolution of 5184x3456 pixel (like mine 60D). Because you never use all of them, say you use 5000x3300 for your subject/object (that's pretty good). 4. Your used pixel multiplied by 0.1 mm resolution gives you your max. object size of your image: max. 500x330 mm (better smaller) 5. Shot under good light conditions with a sturdy tripod at ISO 100 and an aperture of max. 10 with a prime lens. Hope it helps a bit. Karsten PS: For structured light the conditions are similar. |

Kiesel Thank you very much! So with my work will be used dslr camera and agisoft photoscan to get a low cost effective. (photoscan only $ 179). But the time will be slower than the "structured light"? |

I have forgotten to mention that the obove calculation is only true for the resolution in x and y direction related to the camera sensor. The resolution in z-direction is in photogrammetry allways worse by a factor of two or more because it depends on the stereo base of the camera positions. Normally a base with 1/5 to 1/10 of the distance to your subject/object is used. The bigger the stereo base the better the z-resolution but the worse the feature matching between the two photos. So in practice it is a compromise between the both. So devide your max. object size of your image once again at least by two and you get: max. 250x165 mm. Quote: So with my work will be used dslr camera and agisoft photoscan to get a low cost effective. (photoscan only $ 179). Yes, but you need a powerful computer with a lot of RAM and a good graphic card and you get this also not for low cost ![]() Quote: But the time will be slower than the "structured light"? Yes, and with structured light you have a better control which part of your object needs further scanning. Another advantage of structured light is that your scan has already the right dimension (it is scaled). The scan out from Agisoft PhotoScan standard edition needs scaling (for example in the free Meshlab) So both techniques are working. Good luck! Karsten |

David Laserscanner has a accuracy of 0.1% in structured light mode and 0.5% in Laser mode. http://www.david-3d.com You can download the demo and test it in laser mode with a Logitech C615 webcam and a line laser. However, the structured light mode is faster and more precise. For a SL setup you need beamer as well. You can scan objects from 10mm to about 600mm. I use David by myself and am very pleased with the quality. |

But the downside to that is if DAVID only be used webcam resolution 2M, or CCD camera using the USB port, the price is very high and is not to be used for other things. It does not use DSLR camera (eg CANON EOS). For DSLR cameras can produce high resolution and clarity. The cost price is also quite high DAVID copyright. |

Hi quangloi37, you can use a DSLR with David Laserscanner as well. See for example this topic at the DAVID forum: http://forum.david-3d.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=5708&p=27390&hilit=dslr#p27390 An other limitation besides the camera is the resolution of the beamer, for example the Acer K11 has a native resolution of 858 x 600 (SVGA) and you can't see much more than you have projected. So for structured light you need at least: - a DAVID-Laserscanner Pro 3 Edition Software on a USB Flash Drive for 329,00 EUR incl. 19 % Tax excl.Shipping costs - a Beamer ( You can use a used one too) - a camera (I think you have one) - your skills to built a calibration corner - a mounting for camera and beamer If that is to expensive to you you had to go with Photogrammetry (for example Agisoft PhotoScan standard edition): For your sculptures you need 20 shots for every round. So with two rounds, some images from the top and foot you need aproximately 50 shots for scanning your smaller sculptures. If you have not the needed powerful computer you could choose one of those services provided in the Agisoft forum http://www.agisoft.ru/forum/index.php?board=7.0 or you use the technique i have described in my post "Processing with Agisoft PhotoScan if you are short in RAM" (needs some improvement). Hope it helps. Karsten |

Hi everyone, I need to scan face and full body with appropriate accuracy, so I'm interested in DAVID structured light scanner, but I wonder that DAVID Structured Light could be moved around the object to scan or I have to make some single scans ? And could you give advice about comparing primesense carmine vs DAVID structured light, which one is better quality ? Thanks. |
