@scantastic: Yes 1400 USD is a lot of money. I am looking forward to see the first 3rd party review on youtube. At least there is room for other companies to place their scanners in a lower price segment like the photon scanner.

If 1400 USD is a lot of money, you should look at this scanner http://www.matterform.net/our-scanner/, the price on website is 599 USD, I think it's more suitable.

Tech specs : The Matterform 3D scanner uses a high definition camera and dual laser lines to capture 3D scans in as little as 3 minutes. The scanner can scan objects up to 190mm x 190mm x 250mm (7.5" diamter x 9.75" height), and yet folds up into a compact size. It’s lightweight, portable, and compact, making it easy to integrate into your workspace.

What is the resolution?

Currently the resolution of the scanner on a 4 inch figurine is 0.43mm @ 0.5 degree scans, with an accuracy of +/- 0.2mm. We're quite excited about the current results, and are working everyday to continue improving the resolution.

Number of points is arbitrary. A square could have 4 points or a million and it would still be a square. However, it's very easy to get between 200,000 points and all the way up into 1 million+. user selectable quality settings and number of scan passes will determine this.

it's hard to say if the scanner is usefull just from the specs. The main purpose of this scanner is to create 3D models that can be printed on a Makerbot Replicator.

I guess the size of the objects the digitizer is optimized to scan is about the size a replicator can print.

If the scanner is too accurate, the scanning process would take much longer and you would get a very big file. Furthermore, the 3D printer has a max resolution too. Even if the scanner would be super accurate, the printer couldn't produce the detail.

Makerbot wants their users to upload the models to Thingiverse. A 100MB super accurate gnome would not be downloaded that often. A 5Mb gnome gets some downloads for sure.

So, I think Makerbot optimized the Scanner for the Replicator and Thingiverse. Therefore, the specs for this particular Scanner seem reasonable to me.
