Just read about a DIY 3D-scanner: The Duo

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cod ... -3d-sensor

sounds very promising for 3D-scanning purposes!

I received a sad message about the Duo Project on Kickstarter :(

********

Awesome backers and community,

We have put our hearts and souls into this project and would love to see nothing more than it’s success, envisioning a future where these technologies would emerge faster and more understood because the distributed nature of open development. We thought the project would ignite a vision worldwide of creating powerful sensors that are in the public domain, understood and construct-able by all.

However, the reality we are in is that we are at 49%. We have done everything within our power to spread the word. We had some great success in getting on Engadget, Gizmodo, Dvice and other major press sites but still never going viral enough to push us past our goal. At the present, we feel how anyone feels when faced with failure; unwanted but extremely inspired to do better.

Honestly, we are even somewhat puzzled on why the project has not been more widely adopted. We created our initial offerings with a goal to showcase the DUO’s potential, educate and paint the vision, but as some have noted, we may have to show more to gain supporters. In doing so, please keep in mind that the problems we are solving are not easy and take time, so we ask for your patience in knowing that we are hard at work.

Here is a quick summary of our progress:

Research and testing of real-time 3D object scanning yielding positive results.
Initial cross-platform driver development and updates to allow for faster acquisition.
Complete rewrite of high level tracking algorithms, now even faster and more robust.
For our truly inspiring backers, if the project does not raise, we are thinking up some ways to show you our gratitude and respect for understanding the vision. Even if it’s just a small gesture we cannot thank you enough for your dedication and ongoing support.

Don’t give up hope! If you want this project to succeed, the best way you can help is send an email to all your family and friends and tell them to help back the project. Not because they need a 3D Sensor but because the world needs a more open approach to science and technology.

Also give us a like/share on FB, reddit or other social media sites: http://facebook.com/duo3d

Thanks for your support and feedback,

The DUO Team

The DUO is back and it looks great :)

http://duo3d.com/about

It is a phtotgrammetry based device that can recognize objects in 3D. Best of all, it offers an SDK for developers.

I am intending to order one and test it as a 3D scanning device.

What do you think? Could this hardware be the base for a DIY 3D Scanner?

The 3D-Resolution in their demo-video didn't look very promising. :(
