I was hoping to start with the 1.09 and scan some faces, but my work decided to buy a 1.08 so I could use it to scan a Mercedes. So now I finally have access to a scanner! (My tests with the 1.08 have been on my childrens faces. They are successful, but not nearly as detailed as the 1.09 results I've seen others post.)

I am still experimenting with different software; I've tried scenect and skanect. Skanect is easier to use, but I can't save anything w/o paying for the license. Scenect seems to be fine, but I understand it only generates a point cloud. I haven't tried Artec yet or "ReMe".

I don't mind if I have to pay for the software (I'll ask work to pay for it). Does anybody have any strong opinion about which software would be best suited for my application using the Carmine sensor? Any opinions would be appreciated.

Regards,
Toffer

If you intend to scan a big object, most likely you have to do several scans and then stich them together. You can use Skanect or ReMe to get meshes and stich them togeter with mestmixer. Another option is to use Artec and stich it with its internal stitching algorithm.mScenect is, in my opinion, a little problematic, since you need to generate the mesh too.

I would recommend Artec, because you have a features in one software bundle.

I figured out that I can use the 1.08 by recording very short scan times and stitching them together in DAVID software. This way I can do a car in small bites instead of one huge file.
I needed to buy the Skanect license so I could export a higher res and colored .obj, (but the color didn't really matter to me). Then I can clean them up in DAVID and fuse them watertight. Then I process them in meshmixer.

Just the front end, and after a few tries, I got a decent scan. The trick was to get as close as possible and make small slow circular motion with the scanner. It stopped recording after a while. Is the reason that it can only record up to a certain amount of time or data?

This scan was done with skanect and the 1.08. It was 2 long scan recordings, one of each corner.
Then I exported as .obj's and cleaned and aligned in DAVID.
I will try to do the whole car after Christmas.
