Which software is used to get a 3D model ? http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-6452_7-576 ... &tag=title Looks like they're using the iPad's IMU for coarse local tracking at frame-rate then KinectFusion-like reconstruction (based on the ICP/TSDF overlays in one of their videos) at ~2 fps. Clever of them to use the IMU: they're very accurate on recent devices. As far as I can tell, their sensor is essentially a PrimeSense Capri/Link with a plastic bracket. They'll be restricted on the quality of the reconstructions, as the iPad 4 only has 1GB of shared CPU/GPU memory, so they'll be lucky if they can use a 512^3 voxel grid. iPad 5 will probably ship with 2GB, but that's still limiting. You can see the resolution they're using by looking at the size of the triangles in the mesh they're generating. Still, it looks great when textured well. Kudos to them for both bringing a mobile depth sensor to market, and doing it really well so we can all see the level of interest out there for 3D scanning. |
