I have an optician as an employee, so I was able to custom grind three glare free lenses at cost for my Virtuspecs (he was very impressed by the design of them). At this point my limiting factor is my skills as a scanner, not the quality of my lenses.

I just received my primesense 1.09. I tested it against my xtion pro live. I use skanect 1.3. I noticied that the 1.09 has the same distance characteristics as the xtion. Am I missing something here?
I assumed that the 1.09 could be placed closer to the object being scanned. But when I swap scanners, the 1.09 does not allow the closer range. I'm usung the openNI2 driver 64 bit. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Victor

Hi, I just ran a test with both the Carmine and the Asus with Artec Studio. This software shows the distance in which the sensor is detecting objects. I moved the scanner as close to a box as possible.

First, the Asus:

Then the Carmine:

Notice, that the Asus detects the nearest object at about 40 cm, whereas the Carmine detects the nearest object at about 22 cm.

Please try to re-start Skanect with the carmine and have a look on the information what scanner was detected.

Thanks Bernhard,
The Carmine 1.09 ended up working just fine. With the Xtion pro live, the Skanect's IR screen worked optimally when the color was mainly red. The 1.09 however, seems to work well when the IR viewer is showing pink (closer to the object). The 2.5 reading glasses work well also thanks to you and MagWeb. I'm developing a CNC controlled scanner mount that will move the Carmine 1.09 up & down on a curve to acomodate the curve of the Head and rotating an old hair styilist chair with stepper motors. If it works, I'll post the results. I will eventually be purchasing Artec Studio to handle multiple scans. Thanks for sharing.

Victor

Is anyone out there using any kind of handle to hold their Carmine, or do you just grab the base like I do? Please hold all snide comments

I once tried the HammerNub. However it turned out that no handle, or the standard handle was even easier to operate ;)

This is a Carmine/Artec question for Virtumake:

I know you have you like to perform full body scans without glasses mod, and then a head scan with glasses. You then removed the head from the first scan and fuse the body with the high resolution glasses mod head scan. Instead of removing the head from the first scan, have you ever simply used Artec to fuse the high res head with the low res head, or does resolution mismatch make this impossible? And if it can be done, does the program lean towards the better resolution, or dumb it down? Hope that made sense. :ugeek:

Hi guys,

i'm new here. Been researching 3d scanner for the past few months now. I'm building an electric motorbike and i need to 3d print some parts to fit other parts of my bike. For example: i have 3 cables coming on top of my motor and i would like to print an insulation box on top of the cables.

So I'm looking for a portable 3d scanner so i can scan the top of my motor, then on the computer i can design my box around the cables.

Am I right in saying that the highest scan precision (at an affordable price) is with the Primesense Carmine 1.09 with the Virtuspecs mod ? I need sub-millimter precsion, around 0.1mm would be great if at all possible.

thanks for your input,

Hugues

Hi Hugues!

That's an interesting project. Unfortunately the Carmine with Virtuspecs has no such high resolution. In this case I would recommend a David Laserscanner System.

@Scantastic: You can fuse scans with different resolution, but you would lose some details of the high resolution scan.
