My Carmine 1.09 is on the way. In previous posts I have read that the glasses mod disables the color camera. I have the option of having glare-free +2.50 lenses ground to my specifications and could potentially not obstruct the color camera. My question is whether that camera is disabled simply because it has a piece of tape blocking it, or is that a moot point because the camera would not function properly anyway if it did not have the +2.50 correction as well?

Also, has anyone tried to scanning larger objects such as faces and full bodies using the carmine 1.09 but without the mod? If so, how were the results?

Yes, the camera is just disabled because of the black tape ;)

I am looking forward to see your results with better lenses!

In your hands it would probably make a difference, but the better lenses probably won't counteract my noobness :D

My Carmine made it from Hong Kong to NJ USA in two days and I was very impressed. Here is my first serious attempt scanning Michelle with no glasses mod applied. I will try glasses down the road, but am already very excited by the improvement over my Kinect Xbox 360.

Hi everyone! New to this forum, and finding some great info already.

I am building the virtuspecs (thanks VirtuMake for sharing!), and was also looking at buying the optics separately. I searched edmunds as well and talked to their customer service. As I understand what we need is

http://www.edmundoptics.com/optics/opti ... enses/2734

* we need to match +2.5 reading glasses, ie spherical correction of 2.5 diopter
* diopter to focal: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hb ... oclen.html
* f = 1/2.5 = 0.4m = 400mm
* The max f (EFL on their lens specs) avail is 127mm

Let me know if I got this wrong. Otherwise, we're back to cutting cheap reading glasses from the pharmacy :)
A little question: would there be a difference if you cut round vs rectangular reading glasses?

I attached above a link to edmunds optical. I didn't search long, but I will seek out the correct lens that will work as you recommended...unless you beat me to it. They are usually pretty reasonable. They ship from the US.

The only difference between cutting round vs rectangular lenses is identifying the optical center. In round you assume it is simply the center of the lens. In a rectangle you would want to verify the location of the optical center to prevent spherical aberration which would decrease the quality of your scans. An optician with a lensometer could make the center mark in no time at all. You might have to convince him/her that it is in the name of science, and that you are not trying to grind your own glasses to wear yourself :D

Got it - thanks for the info. Will buy cheap round glasses as I am not sure my local optician will do anything for free :)

I like the idea of getting the glasses done by a optician very much! Has anyone tried this? Is there a theoretical advantage in comparison the the cut-out reading glasses?

Probably the custom glasses could be coated with a special filter to get some advantage?
